Narayan Ashram is an important destination for many Hindu pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, and lies along the main hiking route leading north from the Uttarakhand district capitol of Pithoragarh. The Ashram was founded by Swami Narayan in 1936 in the mountains above the Mahakali River along the India-Nepal border.
